Founded in 789 by Idriss I, Fez was the first of the Moroccan imperial cities. In order
to escape the rampant cholera and the terror of Queen Isabella of Spain, Andalusians,
Berbers, Arabs and Jews found shelter in the 'Athens of Africa'. All of these different
cultures brought with them their traditions and therefore enriched the city, paving the
way to the future kingdom of Morocco.
Fez is known for its handicrafts, its architecture, its culture, its reliefs and for its charm: memories of the past, a geographic and historic crossroads, the Medina of Fez is a true medieval Arab city where the present lives side by side with a past that is still very visible.
